Hey there,
I've listened to MeShell'Ndegeocello, the album named "Comfort Woman" and I'm amazed by the drummer Chris Dave. His drumming is so tasty and the "Electro-Acoustico" drums sound is a succeed.
Any informations about the guy behind the drums ? Maybe he's famous but I must admit I don't know him.

Hi Yuk,
Chris Dave has played a lot with the great Kenny Garret and before he was playing with an awesome funk/Rn'b band from Mineapolis named Mint Condition where he shares the drums with the singer named Stockley who is also an incredible drummer too.
Chris is one of the Dennis Chambers's favorite...
Merry Christmas and have a great holidays season !!!
Peace.

Along with drumming, I write articles for Drummer Magazine here in the UK. I love speaking to and interviewing R&B and Gospel drumers. For the most part, these guys (Brian Fraiser-Moore, Gerald Heyward, Erik Green, Erik Tribbett, Nissan Stewart, Aaron Spears and tonnes more) all come from Philly.
There is a Philly 'sound' with fast hands and feet, and funky groove, alongside wild and almost over-played fills. Chris Dave is widely accredited as being the Daddy of this style of playing...
Hence... Cheirs "Daddy" Dave.
The other cats in Philly can't heap enough praise on this dude. I'm dying to meet him, the Mint Condition disks are a lesson in "Drumming .101" that is, groooooove!!!!

Yes it is true what you say about Mint Condition. That was a great group of musicians that all played with incredible facility. Chris and Stokley both are incredible drummers. Don't forget Lil John Roberts. He is another Philly Phunk Phenom!! Merry Christmas, PT.

Chris is a monster. An influence of my young favs like Hoenig, Carlock and Hass.
I met Hass in Europe once and he commanded to me to buy Live from the Mint Factory by Mint Condition and to also check out Chris Dave, his favorite at the time.
Chris is one of todays great funk and jazz drummers.

Indeed. Chris is an absolute BEAST on the drums. Phenomenal groove. That Meshell disc is amazing, as is the Mint Condition stuff that you guys mentioned.

Ya he's totally sick. I got to see him live with Meshell and it was unbelieveable. He does this really cool thing where he plays this insane single stroke roll as a fill (very contolled and even) and plays straight to beat one where he plays a rimclick...I have no idea how he does it but it sounds so cool.

I saw him w/ Kenny Garrett in '98. Dave scared the shit out of everyone that night. He's got some sick up-tempo feels that are just dense w/ all sorts of insanity. Then he can turn around and play the nastiest hip-hop/funk feel this side of Jerome Brailey.
Mark Simmons from Diane Reeves band is another bad cat from that high school in Houston that Mint Condition came out of.
